The P.G.E. Railway

The Matchcover Storyteller

40-strike, rear strike matchcover

The Pacific Great Eastern Railway (P.G.E.) was a railway company incorporated in Vancouver in 1912 to connect Vancouver to Prince George. A key priority was getting resources to the port of Vancouver. High costs lmited line expansion & completion until 1956 when the final link was blasted between Vancouver & Squamish along Howe Sound. That was when the first train was able to travel all of the original proposed route!
This 40-strike, rear strike matchcover celebrates that completion.

In 1972, the B.C. Government bought the P.G.E.. and renamed it the British Columbia Railway; in 2004, it in turn sold it to CN.
