Cherio’s, NYC

The Matchcover Storyteller

It’s difficult to find a cohesive look at Cherio’s Restaurant. I have it open in at least the 1930’s. There are ads and articles a-plenty online but little true history. I also have Cherio’s at 3 different locations on 53rd, 51st and 50th streets in NYC.

One story: in the 1930s it was a hangout for NY publishers and authors. Maxwell Perkins, a Scribner’s editor, took so many authors there, that the owner eventually hung a taxidermyed sailfish Maxwell had caught while out fishing with one of his authors,. — Ernest Hemingway!
