KHOW Radio, Denver

The Matchcover Storyteller

KHOW could refer to a Denver Talk-Radio station, or a Burmese noodle soup.

Let’s go with radio.

The matchcover is a 30-strike, front strike Jewelite.

It signed on as a KFXF in 1925 in Colorado Springs, and moved to Denver in 1927. After one more name change, it became KHOW in 1958.

One of the most controversial talk show hosts of all time, Alan Berg worked at KHOW in 1978 in 1979.. He was called the most popular, and the most disliked radio host in Denver. Management was uncomfortable with his style and let him go. Five years later, working for KOA, he was gunned down outside his home by The Order, a white supremacist group. “Talked To Death” is a very good 1987 read on Berg and that event. I’m pretty sure that book helped me temper my approach as a radio, talk show host! Seriously!

You can also catch a little bit of KHOW in the 1980 movie “The Shining“ with longtime morning team Hal & Charlie.
