WJBK-TV, Detroit MI

The Matchcover Storyteller

WJBK TV in Detroit signed on in 1948. It was an affiliate of both CBS and Dumont. Dumont had been created pretty much to sell its own products, but was gone by 1955, unable to compete with the more extensive infrastructure of CBS and NBC. In 1948, WJBK was one of 8 stations receiving Dumont’s Teletranscription service that provided about twice as much film footage as Hollywood sources!

WJBK was the third station to sign on in Detroit, all of them within about a 14 month timeframe. It operated out of the Masonic Temple until 1956 when it moved into purpose built studios.

It has been a Fox station since 1994.
