T. Wright’s Saloon & Supper Club

The Matchcover Storyteller

A lot of people have asked (and researched) through the years whether this 30 strike rear-striker is somehow sports related. There are a number of people selling this on eBay, and other sites as hockey themed because of one of the characters on this matchcover, but –

It is not.

T Wright’s Saloon and Supper Club was founded in a suburb of Minneapolis in 1980 by four men: Kenny Rockler, Tom Stevens, Bill Light and, yes, Tommy Wright. It operated till about 1992 or ‘93. It was not a franchise, though in 1981, Kenny Rocker thought that would be nice.

A 1982 review said the place was not much to look at – cinder block on the outside and definitely “roadhouse“ on the inside. But it’s 17,000 squre feet were always packed to the gills. It appears to be where pretty much everybody went when they didn’t want to go someplace else – like the country club. Burgers, beers, some video games; it was a hang out. You could make reservations, but even then you’d be waiting a half hour for your table to open.

There’s no other information on Tommy Wright; no word on just why the place closed. But the match cover is “yellow”, a “saloon” ”, “supper club“, “Minnesota“ and probably a few more.
